Detroit Lions beat Los Angeles Rams for team’s first playoff win in 32 years

The Detroit Lions won a playoff game on Sunday night, defeating Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams 24–23. Jared Goff threw for a touchdown and completed a game-winning first down against the team that cut him loose. The Lions (13-5) snapped a nine-game postseason losing streak, the longest in NFL history, which began with a victory over Dallas in January 1992. They had not hosted a postseason game since they lost one two years prior.

For the first time in team history, Detroit will host two playoff games at home when they play Tampa Bay or Philadelphia in the divisional round on Sunday.

“I had the city as my opponent. Defence end Aidan Hutchinson, a native of the Detroit region and a lifelong Lions supporter, stated, “This city has been so deserving of this for so long.” “The supporters have endured many years of subpar football.”

The Rams (10-8) had a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Detroit’s defense held. A holding penalty pushed Los Angeles out of field goal range, and Stafford – the Lions’ longtime quarterback who won a Super Bowl after he was traded to the Rams – threw incomplete onfourth down.

The Lions were able to run out the clock on the first play following the two-minute warning when Goff hit Amon-Ra St Brown for 11 yards. This was much to the joy of the team’s intrepid supporters, who watched their team’s second postseason victory since capturing the 1957 NFL crown.

“Well done, Lions.” Rams head coach Sean McVay said of the group, “I have nothing but respect for them.”

Halfway through the second quarter, Goff put Detroit ahead 21-10 against the team he led to the Super Bowl five years prior. He was 22 of 27 for 277 yards and found rookie tight end Sam LaPorta for a two-yard touchdown pass. Three years ago, the Lions acquired Goff for Stafford and with two first-round picks.
