Coach fired by the Browns takes a final shot at Kareem Hunt.
Days after being fired, former running backs coach of the Cleveland Browns, Stump Mitchell, had some unpleasant words to say about Kareem Hunt.
Since being let go by the Browns, Mitchell has embarked on a mini-tour of the media. He was fired along with tight ends coach T.C. McCartney and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
In a one-on-one interview with Camryn Justice of News 5 Cleveland, Mitchell disclosed that he had a shaky connection with Hunt while he was in Cleveland.
Getting the most out of Kareem was something I was unable to accomplish when I was there. “I hope the next coach can get the best out of Kareem if they bring him back,” Mitchell said to Justice. “The goal of coaching is to improve a player, but I was unable to persuade him to arrive at practice on time or to avoid being the last person out of the room during meetings. Although Kareem is a tremendous player, this is a team game, so I made every effort to communicate with him through Deshaun and Jacoby Brissett. However, in our line of work, time is important.
The last five seasons, Hunt has been a member of the Browns. For all those years, Mitchell served as his coach.
Mitchell only had positive things to say about his time with the Browns, excluding his criticism of Hunt.
Mitchell remarked, “I had the chance to work for this organization for five years.” “There is absolutely no bad blood.”
Hunt’s relationship with the Browns was erratic at best. In 2022, he staged a brief standoff and asked for a trade. After his return, he saw a gradual reduction in his playing time in Cleveland, mostly behind Nick Chubb.
After the 2022–2023 season, it seemed as though Hunt’s tenure with the Browns was coming to an end. But with Hunt’s comeback and Chubb’s season-ending knee injury, the Browns needed an experienced back.
Hunt concluded the previous campaign with a team-high nine running touchdowns on 135 carries for 411 yards. However, it was the lowest yards per carry in his career—3.0. Mitchell expressed optimism that Hunt can improve, but he reaffirmed his need for greater dedication.
Mitchell remarked, “I really feel I got an opportunity to get the most out of everybody, except for Kareem.” Kareem has a lot to contribute, in my opinion. However, I believe that if he puts all of his effort into achieving his goals and refuses to settle for what he has always been, he will be an incredible player.
