Carolina Panthers Hire First-Time Play Caller As Perplexingly Dumb Head Coach.
As per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Carolina Panthers have selected Dave Canales, the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to take over as head coach. Canales will work with rookie quarterback Bryce Young. The hiring of Canales, who previously coached Geno Smith and Russell Wilson as the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks, is not a bad move in the short term. Canales did wonders with Baker Mayfield the previous season.
Sources claim that Dave Canales, the offensive coordinator for the Buccaneers, will be joining the Panthers as head coach. Canales accepted the employment offer from the Panthers. Source: “It will get done.”
However, the hiring was not a one-shot deal. It took place in a market that included, among other things, the availability of Bill Belichick, the greatest coach of all time. (RELATED: Jim Harbaugh Named Head Coach of Chargers, Per Sources: REPORT)
I get that the Panthers wanted to add someone to complement Bryce Young, but they were so taken with Canales that they hired him on the same day that they were supposed to interview Mike Vrabel, the former coach of the Tennessee Titans
Canales is incredibly green as well. This is his first year calling plays in the NFL, having served as offensive coordinator for Tampa for just one year. From there, he takes over as the head of a whole franchise.
When you compare his lack of experience to that of Vrabel or Belichick, I find this move to be rather puzzling.
Worse, every indication suggests that Belichick will end up working for the Atlanta Falcons, who are in the same division as them.
It’s plausible that Belichick was uninterested in the Carolina position. After all, the team has an unstable owner, one of the league’s least skilled lineups, and is lacking a first-round choice this year due to Bryce Young’s future being mortgaged. However, as previously mentioned, they scheduled interviews with Vrabel and other more seasoned individuals, such as Raheem Morris, the defensive coordinator for the Rams, who has extensive head coaching experience.
Man, I have no idea. Canales might disprove my assertions. At this point, he’s undoubtedly an unknown commodity.
The Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, and Falcons are the only three teams still seeking a head coach. With Belichick’s move to Atlanta seems more and more likely, Vrabel essentially has two alternatives left. I’m surprised that Vrabs still doesn’t have a place to call home. He could have to wait a year for another opening unless he teams up with Dan Quinn in Seattle.
