Before the big year, the Cowboys give Mike McCarthy an ultimatum.
The Dallas Cowboys are in a transitional phase following yet another heartbreaking playoff loss. Following their devastating loss to the Green Bay Packers, Mike McCarthy’s contract was in jeopardy, and many believed he would be let off.
Jerry Jones, the team owner, surprised everyone by keeping him on for an additional year. But it appears that his longer term comes with a big disclaimer.
Jones declined to extend McCarthy’s contract, according to Andrew Gamble of the Mirror, and will instead try to let him complete it in Arlington.
For some frustrated Cowboys fans, it would seem weird that America’s Team provided a last-minute lifeline to a coach who had allowed early playoff exits. Despite his lacklustre postseason record in Dallas, he manages to survive as the team’s head coach.
McCarthy is the Dallas head coach with the greatest victory percentage in franchise history, at 62.7%. Furthermore, the Cowboys have a 12-5 record over the last three seasons, which is a mark they last held under Jim Johnson and Barry Switzer in the 1990s.
McCarthy also seemed committed to ending his unlucky postseason run. Prior to the 2024 season, he made a significant promise:
“We’re capable of winning. We are adept at training for victory. The proper folks are here. However, we haven’t yet reached the point of winning postseason games. It is really depressing to be sitting here and discussing. I know how to win, though. We are going to cross that line. I am standing here today because I am completely confident in it.
McCarthy continued, saying, “My goal is to win a championship.” Other than that, I didn’t come here to get another contract. In order to win a global title, I travelled to Dallas.
Posts McCarthy needs to work on during the offseason.
Tipping the offensive leaks in Arlington is one of McCarthy’s priorities in his last season there. Three areas of the Dallas roster that need attention this offseason are highlighted by Inside the Star.
Their lack of a run game is the major weakness in their attack. Since they haven’t discovered the ideal Ezekiel Elliot substitute, they’ll probably turn to the trade market or the draft to meet their needs.
Even though the Cowboys have one of the league’s most prolific passing offences, CeeDee Lamb is not able to carry the bulk of the load by himself. It is to be expected that the team will search for a different wide receiver to line up next to him.
