After being left off of the NFL honors list, Breece Hall of the Jets shares a humble perspective.
In a season that featured a hard-to-watch offense that somehow sunk lower each week, RB Breece Hall of the New York Jets provided the team with one of two bright spots. (WR Garrett Wilson being the other.) While Jets fans were thankful for Hall’s standout performances, the same cannot be said about the NFL awards voters.
The five contenders for the AP Comeback Player of the Year award were revealed by the NFL on Thursday. Despite Hall’s disappearance, the running back accepted the news with a smile.
“All will complete a circle. I’m pleased for everyone nominated for the honor and I don’t disparage anyone! Never the kind to be hateful. I’ll take mine 🤞🏾 Just wait!☳,” he wrote on his Twitter account, X.
Hall’s comeback merits recognition
In 2022, Hall’s NFL career got off to a fast start. His workload grew with each game, and in Week 6, he had his best performance with 20 carries for 116 yards against the Green Bay Packers.A week later, he resumed exactly where he left off, scorching the Denver Broncos for 72 yards on just four attempts before rupturing his ACL, which put an end to his exciting rookie campaign.
The Jets’ offseason was focused on monitoring Hall’s workload and gradually getting him back into the lineup before the 2023 campaign. But Hall had other plans. He gained 127 yards on the ground in the first game of the season. He appeared just as explosive as he had before the injury right away.
Hall had 591 receiving yards and 994 rushing yards at the end of his second season. Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers led the league in yards from scrimmage, while Hall led all NFL running backs with 76 receptions.
However, he won’t be taking home any hardware for those stats.
Rather, a quarterback has a strong chance of winning Comeback Player of the Year. Joe Flacco of the Cleveland Browns, Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Bucs, Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams, and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins are the four signal callers among the five finalists.
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who returned to the NFL after a harrowing event in which his heart stopped on the field during a game last season, rounds out the list.
