Former player for Toronto FC: “We just knew how to win” when speaking on his time there.
Toronto FC, which finished last in their conference and had only four wins in the 2023 season, is preparing for a possible comeback in the 2024 campaign. Fans are excited to see a stronger and more competitive squad on the field as preseason practices get underway.
Retired player Steven Beitashour, a pivotal member of the legendary 2017 Toronto FC club, provided insights into the team’s attitude during their heyday in an interview with TFC Republic. When asked to sum up that moment, Beitashour firmly said, “We just knew how to win,” which is a far cry from the team’s current situation.
In the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, Beitashour was chosen by the San Jose Earthquakes in the second round (30th overall). He went on to win a Supporters’ Shield with his home team. Although Beitashour played for a number of teams, including the Vancouver Whitecaps, LAFC, and the Colorado Rapids, his greatest accomplishments occurred in Toronto, where he won an MLS Cup, a Supporters’ Shield, and two Canadian Championships. Beitashour was acquired by Toronto through a trade with Vancouver prior to the 2016 season, and he was instrumental in turning the Reds from MLS Cup contenders into the best team in the league. Regrettably, a pay dispute with club management after the 2017 season caused his impending departure.
As the club and its passionate fan base work for atonement, memories of their previous success reverberate. The prospect of a new season in 2024 is exciting, and the insights from seasoned players like Beitashour serve as a reminder of the heights the squad had attained and the goals it still wants to achieve.
