Hand it over to Damar! Joe Flacco, the Buffalo Bills safety who recovered from on-field cardiac arrest to play again this season, is the ‘NFL Comeback of the Year’ opponent of Hamlin and he feels that he should win the title.
Joe Flacco, the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, is adamant that Damar Hamlin deserves to win the NFL’s Comeback of the Year title, even if it means he will lose out!
Following his comeback from a cardiac arrest, Buffalo Bills safety Mike Flacco is the overwhelming favorite to win the honor, which will be announced at the NFL Honors night in Las Vegas ahead of the Super Bowl. Hamlin is also a nominee.
The prize is often given out for on-field comebacks, but this year is expected to be a little different because Hamlin will be playing for the Bills in the second half of 2023 after returning from a near-death experience.
And Flacco thinks that if he was left out and Hamlin was the one making the speech in two weeks, then that would have been the right choice.
When asked by CBS Sports Radio if Hamlin should receive the honor, he responded, “Definitely.”
“I simply believe that you should mentally prepare yourself to return to that level of comfort; the physical aspect is self-explanatory, but the mental aspect—especially given his position—is really cool.”
The match was called off, and Hamlin spent nine days in the hospital before fully recovering.
Since then, he has played in three games for the Bills this season, including the team’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs last weekend.
One of the game’s most significant plays involved Hamlin as well. He received the ball during a fake punt, but he was unable to get the necessary yardage for a first down.
Although Flacco did not receive a contract offer to play for any team in the NFL prior to being selected by the Browns in December, he has had an amazing few months on the field.
After leading the Browns to the playoffs, he threw for 1,616 yards and 13 touchdowns in six games; nevertheless, they were defeated 41-14 by the Houston Texans in the wildcard round.
“I’m not sure where I’m coming from,” Flacco responded when questioned about his eligibility for the NFL award.
I have no idea where the majority of the individuals on that list are returning from. That was probably my first thought.
