David Goffin Reveals Why He Was “Inspired” by Grigor Dimitrov and Gaël Monfils After Considering Retirement

Belgian tennis star David Goffin recently opened up about his near-retirement and how two of his closest friends on the ATP Tour, Grigor Dimitrov and Gaël Monfils, inspired him to keep playing. At 33 years old, Goffin has faced numerous injuries and tough stretches in recent years, prompting him to reflect on his future in tennis. However, watching the resilience and passion of Dimitrov and Monfils reignited his own drive to continue his career.

In a candid interview, Goffin explained how he had contemplated stepping away from the sport after a series of physical and mental struggles. “There were moments when I seriously thought about retiring,” he admitted. “I was tired, my body wasn’t responding like it used to, and it felt like my best tennis was behind me. But then I looked at players like Grigor and Gaël, and they gave me a new perspective.”

Finding Inspiration in Dimitrov and Monfils

Both Dimitrov and Monfils, like Goffin, are in their 30s and have experienced similar ups and downs in their careers. Yet, the pair continue to play with the same enthusiasm, often lighting up tournaments with their flair and athleticism.

“Grigor has always been one of the most graceful players on the tour, and his work ethic is incredible. Even after all these years, he’s still pushing himself to improve,” Goffin said. “And Gaël – he’s a real entertainer. He plays with so much joy, no matter what. That kind of passion is contagious.”

Seeing Dimitrov reach deep stages of tournaments and Monfils’ dramatic comeback from injury-filled seasons showed Goffin that there was still a lot left to play for. Their perseverance made him realize that age or physical setbacks didn’t have to mark the end of his tennis journey.

Renewed Drive for the Future

Goffin also credited his peers for helping him regain confidence on the court. “Watching them, I realized that tennis isn’t just about results or rankings. It’s about enjoying the game and embracing the challenge, no matter where you are in your career.”

While Goffin acknowledges that he may not have many years left on the tour, he’s determined to make the most of his remaining time. “I’m inspired now, and I’m going to enjoy every match. If Grigor and Gaël can do it, so can I.”

As Goffin enters the next phase of his career, he carries a new sense of purpose and optimism, thanks to the influence of his fellow tennis veterans. His story is a testament to how camaraderie and inspiration among athletes can reignite a passion for the sport, even in the face of adversity.
