Update: Panthers do not expect their star player again due to the…..

Thomas Brown of the Panthers isn’t expected to stay in Carolina.

Although it has long been speculated, Joe Person of The Athletic has revealed that offensive coordinator Thomas Brown of the Panthers will not be employed by new head coach Dave Canales. After completing his rookie campaign as an NFL offensive coordinator, Brown is drawing interest from othemr teams for head coaching and coordinator positions.

For the past few years, Brown has become a very popular young name in NFL coaching circles. He began his coaching career at the collegiate level as a strength and conditioning coach at Georgia, his former school. Following one-year stints coaching running backs at Chattanooga, Marshall, Georgia, and Wisconsin, Brown moved to Miami to work under head coach Mark Richt as the Hurricanes’ offensive coordinator, however Richt continued to be in charge of playcalling.

Brown spent one additional year at South Carolina before joining Sean McVay’s staff in Los Angeles as a running backs coach. After just one year, McVay gave Thomas the title of assistant head coach and eventually assigned him to the tight ends for a season. When Brown began interviewing for head coaching positions, demand for his services grew, and he ultimately secured a position in Carolina as Frank Reich’s offensive coordinator. It was an unfortunate role for Brown since, like Richt, Reich kept play-calling responsibilities and occasionally gave them to Brown during unproductive times before letting him go.

Brown’s anticipated departure from Carolina is more a reflection of Canales’ future intentions than it is of Brown. Canales has asked to speak with Marcus Brady, the senior offensive assistant with the Eagles, and there have been whispers that his Tampa Bay quarterbacks coach, Thad Lewis, would follow him to Carolina. During his time as head coach, Canales intends to call plays for the offense; hence, less seasoned individuals are being considered for the position of coordinator underneath him.

When it comes to open jobs, Brown’s name never goes out of style. Brown has already conducted interviews this offseason for offensive coordinator jobs with the Bears, Patriots, and Steelers. He even advanced to the second round of interviews for the Titans head coaching vacancy, which was ultimately filled by Brian Callahan. Because of his leadership potential, Brown will still be a name to watch even if he is unable to secure a new coordinator position for 2024.
