Legend Says Rams Are QB for the Jets’ “Place To Be”

NFL Legend Steve Young Says Los Angeles Rams Are 'Place To Be' For NJets QB Zach Wilson - Sports Illustrated LA Rams News, Analysis and More

Although Matthew Stafford, the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, is only going to be 36 and has had injuries the last two seasons, many believe the organization will select a new signal-caller this offseason. It remains to be seen if the other quarterback is Stafford’s heir apparent, backup, or both, but the candidate might be somewhat of a reclamation project.

In an interview with The Adam Schefter Podcast, Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young expressed his opinion that Zach Wilson of the New York Jets would thrive as a signal-caller for the Rams.

“I believe that LA is the place he should be. Select Sean McVay. According to Deseret News, Young stated, “Follow (Matthew) Stafford and just sit there and watch the magic and then see if you can pick it up.” You have the talent to be among the best, therefore if you can, you should. However, he needs to reach one of those locations.

Wilson, the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, is undoubtedly talented, but his tenure with the Jets has not gone well at all because of a number of circumstances both inside and outside of his control. The BYU product spent three seasons in the Big Apple, starting and often being benched, finishing just 57 percent of his passes for 6,293 yards and 23 touchdowns against 25 interceptions. Young, a former star of the San Francisco 49ers and a fellow BYU alum, thinks that Wilson can still succeed in the NFL with the correct support system in place despite his troubles.

According to Young, “these creative minds are taking advantage of the rule changes.” “(Wilson) must arrive at one of those locations. He must come together (with them). Zach Wilson has to leave these unfriendly environments for quarterbacks if we’re going to see anything from him going forward.

Strangely, Young’s suggestion that Wilson play reserve to “watch the magic” aligned with the Jets’ plans for this season following Aaron Rodgers’ acquisition. But after only four plays into his Jets career, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles, throwing both that strategy and New York’s season into disarray. Young is right; McVay’s Rams have a track record of turning around quarterbacks. Baker Mayfield had a little opportunity to demonstrate his abilities when the Rams claimed him off waivers towards the end of the previous season. He subsequently took advantage of the chance to get a starting position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he had a breakthrough season this year.
