14. Iowa State wins 70–65 on the road after staving off a late Texas charge.
Texas’s Austin In the closing minutes, Iowa State had seen an eighteen-point advantage shrink to just three points. Dylan Disu of Texas was unstoppable, and the boisterous Longhorns home crowd was up and cheering.
Just three days off a devastating defeat at Baylor, the No. 14 Cyclones appeared ready for yet another massive setback. Rather, they managed to secure a hard-fought 70-65 victory on Tuesday night by finding exactly the plays and big shots they required.
Tamin Lipsey scored 12 points, including a crucial 3-pointer in the closing seconds that put an end to Texas’ comeback, and Milan Momcilovic scored 13 for Iowa State.
“Today, our guys really came through.” We were aware of their intensity and physicality,” Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger remarked.
Texas managed to rally behind Disu, who finished with 28 points, including 16 consecutive in a particular segment of the second half, as the Cyclones had a 49-31 lead.
After Texas pulled within 62-59 thanks to two free throws from Disu, the Cyclones, who had trouble shooting the whole second half, responded with a dunk by Tre King with 15 seconds remaining, a free throw from Momcilovic, and a 3-pointer from Lipsey. King had fouled up an easy layup during the preceding play.
Curtis Jones made two free throws with five seconds remaining to give Iowa State (17-5, 6-3 Big 12) the last margin of victory. Lipsey led Iowa State with 12 points.
In the first half, the Cyclones limited Texas (15-8, 4-6) to only 19 points. Guard Max Abmas of the Longhorns, the leading scorer in the NCAA among active players, was held scoreless in the first half and only made three of eleven shots before finishing with 13 points.
Abmas remarked, “We can’t give up a whole half like that and expect to win.”
Disu almost single-handedly brought Texas back. With just over six minutes remaining, he scored Texas’ first 3-pointer and then converted a three-point play to pull the Longhorns within 57-49.
“Great players, it looks like the hoop is so big once they start seeing it go through,” Otzelberger remarked. He was rolling it there a little. We were lucky to receive the stops that we did.

Iowa State: Like many Big 12 teams this year, the Cyclones have had difficulty traveling, so they’ll be glad they didn’t let this one get away. They lost by two points at Baylor on Saturday, earning a split on an arduous trip to the Lone Star state.
Additionally, Iowa State rarely wins in Austin. The Cyclones had dropped 14 of their previous 15 games there and eight straight.
“That game up there (at Baylor) was hard for us.” We wanted to immediately get back on track and unleash our fury on the opposing squad, according to Lipsey.
Texas: With four wins this season, the Longhorns are the best road team in the Big 12. They are unable to keep their home court safe. In Big 12 play, Texas suffered its fourth loss at home. Texas defeated ranked opponents six times in a row, going 3-3 overall.
