C.J. Stroud Passionately Defends Panthers' Bryce Young After Woeful Rookie Season

C.J. Stroud is one individual who understands the difficulties of being a rookie quarterback in the National Football League.

Yes, after an outstanding rookie season that saw the Texans win a playoff game after winning a total 11 games in the previous three seasons, the quarterback was named a nominee for Rookie of the Year. However, Stroud also experienced some humiliating moments as a rookie, which helps him to appreciate the circumstances surrounding the one player selected ahead of him in the previous season.

Bryce Young, the first overall pick, had a difficult first season with the Carolina Panthers, who ended with the poorest record in the league (2-15). In 16 of those contests, Young got the start, throwing for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and 11 fumbles. Just 11 games into Frank Reich’s tenure as head coach, the team benched him and deployed different play callers.

With the offensive situation surrounding him, Stroud feels that Young was put in a difficult position as a rookie and that other factors should be taken into consideration for his lack of success in his first season.

One of those amazing moments was defeating the Stroud’s Texans 15–13 in a head-to-head match in Week 8. In that particular game, Young even outran Stroud in passing yards—235 yards and one touchdown to 140 yards and none.

Overall, Stroud expressed his opinion that the Texans were more prepared for success in his first season than the Panthers were during Young’s debut campaign.

“I came into a situation where we were struggling, I know, but we still had a lot of great pieces,” Stroud stated. Our General Manager, Nick Caserio, brought in a number of strong veterans. DeMeco (Ryans) was the ideal coach for the side we were playing.”

Stroud told Young not to change the way he saw himself because the previous season didn’t go as expected; he stated he personally gave the message to the Panthers quarterback. Though they were rivals on the field, Stroud tried to encourage his fellow draft mate.

“Everyone has a unique path,” stated Stroud. “Perhaps Bryce is going to have a fantastic sophomore year, and I had a decent rookie year. I hope to do (that) as well.
