NBA Trade Ratings: P.J. Washington Joins the Mavericks
The Luka Dončić are preparing to make a run at the playoffs. Multiple reports state that P.J. Washington, a forward, is being acquired by the Mavericks from the Charlotte Hornets. In exchange, Dallas will receive a first-round pick, guard Seth Curry, and forward Grant Williams of the Hornets. Washington, 25, Mavericks in scoring this season with an average of 13.6 points per contest. Williams, 25, agreed to a four-year contract with the Mavericks in the summer, but he has already left the city. Let’s evaluate the agreement for each party.
Umm. More than I applaud this decision for Dallas, I understand it. As an individual talent, Washington surely has a bigger ceiling than Williams. He has greater attacking versatility and is a superior scorer. That’s fantastic! Williams, on the other hand, was a better fit on paper even if he very soon lost favor with the Mavs. Williams is exactly the kind of guy Dallas needs with Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić in the mix. a tough defender with extensive playoff experience who can play several positions, make open threes, and guard several positions? Despite his defensive potential, Washington lacks postseason experience and isn’t as disruptive on the court as Williams. It is a bit of a heavy price to pay for someone who is selected in the first round.
But Washington is undoubtedly talented. Maybe being around such elite skill elevates him to a new level. Even though I thought the Williams match made a lot of sense, in reality it seemed like he wasn’t giving Dallas enough of what they needed. For the time being, I continue to believe that the Mavs would be better off with a player who has more experience in that area in the playoffs.
This is a respectable return; I’m not sure why Charlotte felt she had to give up on Washington. Williams can play a good supporting role for whatever the core is going forward and is the same age. And he at least has a winning mentality that this organization hasn’t seemed to have much of. In the worst case scenario, he will be valued by competitors, giving the Hornets the opportunity to acquire more for him should they choose to pursue a complete teardown. In our culture that is fixated on draft assets, a future first is always valuable, especially when it’s added to the one the team acquired in exchange for Terry Rozier. It’s also wonderful because Curry is a hometown hero. If the group was that keen to get past Washington,
