An argument that started late at night at a vacation property in Point Loma turned fatal when a 38-year-old man from Chicago, Illinois—now known as Mark Giancarlo—passed away from wounds he received during a violent altercation. When the San Diego Police Department arrived at the scene of an emergency call in the early hours of Monday, February 19, they discovered the victim was not breathing. The residence was located in the 2800 block of Poinsettia Drive.

After being taken to a nearby hospital by paramedics, Giancarlo was declared deceased. According to information provided by San Diego police, the incident featured a second male, 44 years old, who was temporarily detained before being released awaiting additional investigation. It is thought that the home where the altercation took place was a temporary dwelling for a group of people from out of town. Lt. Daniel Meyer provided a statement to The Times of San Diego verifying these facts.

Investigating the events that preceded the deadly altercation is being handled by the SDPD Homicide Unit. The specific order of events and the cause of the disagreement are still being investigated. According to Lt. Jud Campbell in an interview with ABC 10News, police have not yet established if the chokehold—which is said to have caused Giancarlo’s medical distress—was a matter of self-defense or connected to a previous relationship between the parties.

Locals have been informed to expect traffic disruptions along Oleander and Poinsettia drives while the San Diego County Medical Examiner investigates to determine the cause of death. According to Hoodline, authorities are still looking for information from the public. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
