Guard Caitlin Clark of the Iowa Hawkeyes recorded her 16th career triple-double on Sunday. She also drew closer to reaching further career scoring milestones and had a place on the Carver-Hawkeye Arena floor dedicated in her honor.

The No. 4 Hawkeyes, fresh off a difficult defeat at Indiana on Thursday, were far more like themselves in their 101-85 triumph against Illinois in Iowa City, Iowa. Clark recorded her sixth triple-double of the year with 24 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists. In the 86-69 loss in Bloomington, Indiana, on Thursday, she was just one assist away from that.

Clark has recorded a triple-double in 16 games, but Iowa has won them all. She trails Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu, who recorded 26 triple-doubles between 2016 and 2020, in career total among NCAA Division I women’s and men’s athletes.

A “22 Clark” decal was applied to the court prior to Sunday’s game, marking the location of Clark’s deep 3-pointer against Michigan on February 15 that broke Kelsey Plum of Washington’s previous NCAA women’s basketball scoring record.

Regarding the decal, Clark remarked, “I didn’t really see it until I came out to warm up.” “Coach [Lisa] Bluder had informed me about it, so I knew.” It’s awesome. To be honest, it seems like it was taken from a bit farther back than I actually did, but that’s where they say I took it.

It’s really unique; I’ll never forget that, and I’ll never forget the shot. I’m grateful that this university and the athletic department chose to take that action even though it wasn’t required of them.

With 33 more points, Clark would tie Kansas’ Lynette Woodard for the women’s major-college record. Currently, she has 3,617 points. Woodard holds the AIAW major-college record with 3,649 points during his pre-NCAA playing career, which spanned from 1977 to 1981. With 3,884 points, Pearl Moore, who performed at Francis Marion from 1975 to 1979, holds the AIWA small school/overall record.

With 3,667 points, Pete Maravich of LSU holds the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s record, which Clark is 51 points away from surpassing. Playing from 1967 to 1970, Maravich was not eligible to play as a freshman. Prior to collegiate basketball’s adoption of the 3-point line, Maravich, Moore, and Woodard were all players.

After making 17 3-pointers on Sunday, the Hawkeyes improved to 24-4 overall and are now tied for second place in the Big Ten at 13-3, one game behind Ohio State (15-1). The Hawkeyes’ defeat against Indiana was hampered by their inability to score fairly, but that was fixed on Sunday. In addition to Clark, three other Iowa starters scored in double figures, and the Hawkeyes’ bench contributed 25 points.

“We felt like we were really sped up on offense at Indiana,” Clark stated. “We simply missed shots as well. We had a lot of good shots, but we also had a lot of offensive opportunities where we might have improved greatly. You want to feel really good about yourself and have a wonderful performance when you return here.
