Russell Wilson States Again His Wish to Stay with the Broncos
Denver’s quarterback situation is one to keep an eye on during the summer. Russell Wilson is open to staying with the Broncos, despite the team looking to move on from him (and incur significant dead cap charges in the process).
Wilson had just two seasons and one under head coach Sean Payton when the Broncos benched him, raising doubts about his future in the club as a postseason berth seemed all but impossible to achieve. The team approached Wilson about renegotiating his contract and threatened to bench him if he didn’t agree to change his injury guarantee. After that, he was the starter for a brief while longer, and his agreement hasn’t changed at all.
Wilson reiterated that he wasn’t ready to create a precedent by postponing the vesting of his $37MM injury guarantee for the 2025 season during a recent interview on the I Am Athlete podcast (via ESPN’s Jeff Legwold). Notably, the nine-time Pro Bowler stated that Payton instructed him to “act like nothing happened” before to the team’s victory over the Bills on November 13. In fact, details regarding the timing of the incident were not made public until Wilson’s benching became public.
If Wilson was cut after June 1st, the Broncos would be in danger of suffering severe cap implications. Nonetheless, he is still probably going to be playing somewhere else in 2024 as Denver gets ready to go on with Jarrett Stidham at quarterback or maybe a first-round pick in the April draft. But Wilson is adamant that he wants to stay in the Mile High City through 2024 and beyond.
The 35-year-old admitted to Brandon Marshall on the show, “I’ve got more fire than ever, honestly, especially over the past two years of what I’ve gone through.” “I hope it’s in Denver, and I hope I get to finish there, whether it’s in Denver or somewhere else. I wanted to be there, and I committed there. I definitely want to attend.
Wilson has taken a constant public position on the issue, but according to Legwold, he still “expects” to move into a new house soon. Given the guaranteed money Denver owes, Wilson might be a cheap acquisition to a team that needs a quarterback. If Wilson were to become a free agent, it would be intriguing to see how much of a market he could command. A third Broncos campaign would be unexpected at this stage, though he would still prefer to avoid it.
