According to an ESPN story, the Seahawks should sign a seasoned cornerback in free agency.
The NFL free agency period for the 2024 offseason will begin in just over a week, and ESPN has published an article outlining one outside free agent that each team should sign.
According to Aaron Schatz’s column, free agents Noah Fant and Leonard Williams of the Seattle Seahawks will sign with the Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively. The Seahawks sign who? Of all people, a cornerback.
Following the paywall, the following is a synopsis of Bengals CB Chidobe Awuzie:
I debated whether to recommend an interior offensive lineman or another pass-rusher for the Seahawks in this situation. Instead, we should choose a starting cornerback who can cover Riq Woolen and hold the slot while Devon Witherspoon blitzes the passer. Awuzie was among the league’s top corners in the first half of 2022 before rupturing his ACL. He had a strong coverage DVOA the previous season. He excels at both zone and man coverage.
Normally, I’m not against these kinds of things, and with the likelihood that Seattle won’t keep Artie Burns or Mike Jackson Sr., I’m not even against to the notion of adding cornerback depth, but I just don’t see the fit. Will he outperform Tre Brown by a significant margin?
His past history of injuries is the strongest argument against signing him.
He was far down the depth chart as a rookie due to hamstring and ankle problems that kept him out of camp. Hamstring issues kept him out of action for little about half of his rookie campaign. He was placed on injured reserve in 2020 because of a hamstring issue. Schatz has already discussed how his 2022 ACL tear prevented him from playing until the end of the season. Awuzie participated in 15 games in 2023 before suffering a herniated disc, which prevented him from playing in one and forced him to be benched during the Bengals’ victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
