Commanders bringing on an experienced tight end, Zachary.
Two sources with knowledge of the agreement informed The Associated Press that Zach Ertz, a veteran tight end, is joining the Washington Commanders.
Because the agreement had not been announced, the individuals spoke to the AP on Wednesday under the condition of anonymity. The contract for the upcoming season is worth up to $5 million, according to a person with knowledge of the transaction.
The 33-year-old Ertz is reunited with his offensive coordinator coach from Arizona, Kliff Kingsbury, at Washington. Before being dismissed by the Cardinals in late November, he spent portions of three seasons as a player.
Ertz, a Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia 76ers, is the first major addition to the NFC East under new general manager Adam Peters of the Commanders. Ertz takes over for Logan Thomas, who was cut last week, along with center Nick Gates and starter left tackle Charles Leno.
After being selected by the Eagles in the second round, Ertz made his NFL debut in 2013 and has since participated in 159 regular-season and postseason games. He has caught 745 passes for 7,815 yards and 48 touchdowns in the last ten years.
It’s unclear who in Washington he will be receiving passes from. The Commanders, who own the second pick in the draft, may select a quarterback with that selection or pursue Kirk Cousins and Russell Wilson in free agency.
