Former quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, Casey Thompson, praises the Sooners.
Casey Thompson, an experienced quarterback, joined the Oklahoma football program this month in preparation for the 2024 campaign. Thompson expressed excitement about sharing the quarterback room with former five-star recruit Jackson Arnold on Wednesday, along with his hopes for the Sooners. In order to build expectation for his performance in the forthcoming season, he also conveyed his gratitude for joining the soon-to-be SEC institution for the 2024 campaign.
Transfer quarterback Casey Thompson told the media on Wednesday, “Everything I’ve ever wanted from a team and a head coach I’ve gotten at Oklahoma.” Thompson signed up for the transfer portal in December of last year, and a month later, he was signed by the Oklahoma football team. Thompson will be coached by Brent Venables, who guided OU to a 10-3 record in 2023 following a 6-7 record in his first season in 2022. Throughout his coaching career, he has won three titles; he was a member of the Oklahoma team that took home the championship in 2000.
Thompson also talked about the team spirit among the young and talented quarterbacks in the room. “I want to be a fantastic teammate when I walk into this room. I wish I could assist these guys. They should be able to assist me, please. Jackson (Arnold), General (Booty), Mike (Hawkins), and Zurb (Brendan Zurbrugg) are the people I want to be close friends with. Being able to support and encourage one another without feeling jealous of one another when you’re playing together creates a unique camaraderie among quarterbacks. He clearly has respect for the other quarterbacks in the Oklahoma football team, which helps to create a spirit of unity and assistance among them.
“I don’t know what my role will be for the fall,” Thompson went on. I can play the game at a high level when I’m well enough to go on the field. This fall, Thompson and Arnold will battle for the starting quarterback spot, but it is anticipated that Arnold will lead the club in 2024.
Casey Thompson: Brings Experience to OU
In 2024, Thompson will start his sixth year of collegiate football. In 2019, he began his playing career with the Texas Longhorns, following standout quarterback Sam Ehlinger. In 2021, the quarterback for Oklahoma football secured a full-time position and amassed 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns against nine picks. Moreover, he rushed for four touchdowns and 155 yards.
But Texas finished with a 5-7 record, and Thompson moved to the Nebraska Cornhuskers after acquiring star transfer Quinn Ewers from Ohio State. In 2022, he passed for 17 touchdowns against 10 picks, but at the end of the season, he once again transferred. For the 2023 season, the six-foot-one gunslinger signed with the Florida Atlantic Owls; however, his season was cut short due to injury. Against five opponents, he finished last year with five touchdowns.
