Eagles coach Nick Sirianni downplays suggestion he's fighting for his job in the playoffs

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Nick Sirianni, whose employment status has been the focus of much conjecture since the Eagles’ 32–9 wild-card loss to the Bucs on Monday night, will probably stay as head coach of the team.

At the half of the Ravens vs. Texans game, Schefter stated, “All signs point to him staying with the Eagles.”

“Nick Sirianni has a job right now, and it seems like it will stay that way,” he continued.

Schefter stated that adjustments to Sirianni’s coaching staff are anticipated. It would be surprising if any of the former defensive coordinators, Sean Desai or Matt Patricia, returned. The future of offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, a rookie, is likewise uncertain.

“There are expected to be changes on the defensive side of the ball,” Schefter did state explicitly.

Following one of the worst collapses in NFL history, a meeting between Sirianni and owner Jeff Lurie was planned for this Friday to talk about Sirianni’s future plans.

The Eagles became the first team in 37 years and the second club in NFL history to open a season with a 10-1 record without winning their division or 12 games.

With losses to the 49ers and Cowboys by 23 and 20 points, a 92-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes after leading by 10 points in the second quarter, a 3-12 loss to the Cards after blowing a 15-point lead at home, and a loss to the Giants after falling behind 24-0 in the second quarter, they finished 1-5 in their last six regular-season games.

Then, facing a squad they had defeated by 14 points earlier in the season, they suffered the second-worst playoff loss in the history of the team.

The Eagles’ lone victory following Week 12 came at the Linc against the Giants, when they had to cling on for dear life after almost blowing a 17-point third-quarter lead. After Week 12, Tommy DeVito, an undrafted rookie who was benched at halftime, was the only quarterback they had defeated.

John Fox of the Broncos, who was fired after four consecutive seasons following the 2014 season, is the only coach in NFL history to be fired after coaching for at least three years and never missing the playoffs.

Sirianni is the only Eagles coach in history to have his first three teams qualify for the postseason, and his 34-17 career record is the greatest in the team’s annals.
