The crash that claimed the life of the Georgia football star was caused by excessive speed.

Georgia lineman Devin Willock and football staffer killed in car crash - The Washington Post

According to a police report, one of the main reasons for the collision that claimed the lives of recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy and Devin Willock was the driver’s excessive speed on a 40 mph zone.

Devin Willock, a football player for Georgia, was not buckled up when he was thrown from the car during a weekend collision that claimed the lives of both him and a member of the recruiting staff, according to authorities.

One of the main reasons for the collision, according to a police report made public on Tuesday, was driving too fast on a road with a 40 mph speed limit.

The collision happened in Athens at 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, less than two kilometers from the campus of the university. The Bulldogs celebrated their second consecutive national championship a few hours earlier with a celebration at Sanford Stadium and a parade through the town.

Willock, a 20-year-old Bulldogs offensive lineman, was declared deceased on the spot. Chandler LeCroy, a 24-year-old recruiting analyst, was the driver of the car when he was transported to the hospital and later passed away.

The offensive lineman Warren McClendon, who had declared on Saturday that he will enter the NFL draft, was one of the two other individuals in the vehicle.

McClendon was seated in the right front passenger seat and, like LeCroy, was restrained by a shoulder and lap belt, according to the police. His only injuries were tiny cuts to the middle of his head, according to the Athens-Clarke County police report.

Victoria Bowles, another Georgia football staff member, was admitted to the hospital after suffering numerous severe injuries. According to the report, she was not using a seat belt when riding in the backseat with Willock.

The Ford Expedition from 2021 “failed to negotiate a left curve, resulting in the vehicle striking the curb with its front passenger tire and leaving the roadway on the west shoulder,” according to police investigators.

Before hitting a tree on the back passenger quarter panel, the SUV ran into two utility poles, one of which was a Georgia Power pole and the other one was sliced in half. That caused the car to spin in a clockwise direction before it crashed into a different tree on LeCroy and Willock’s side, where they were both seated.

The investigation stated that “this caused the vehicle to rotate counter-clockwise prior to achieving final rest against an apartment building” and that the out-of-control SUV also impacted a car that was parked in front of a unit.

LeCroy was not subjected to an alcohol or drug test, according to the report, but the inquiry was still ongoing. The driver’s condition at the time of the collision was unknown to the investigators, and they did not provide an estimated speed.

The crash abruptly changed the joyous atmosphere on the Georgia campus to one of sorrow.

“The greatest brother, roommate, and teammate I could ask for. Willock’s offensive linemate Xavier Truss posted on Twitter, saying, “I don’t even know what to say.” “I wish I could hear that silly laugh again.” A good one was added to Heaven. I will always love you, Dev.

At 6 feet 7 inches and 335 pounds, Willock was a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey.

In the 2022 season, he played a significant role as a backup and started at right guard in Southeastern Conference games against Kentucky and Tennessee.

Willock probably would have been vying for a starting spot in 2023 as the Bulldogs attempt to win a third consecutive national championship, as McClendon and offensive guard Warren Ericson are both expected to enter the NFL draft.

Football teams all throughout the nation sent their condolences. Willock and LeCroy’s names were displayed by Nebraska on the Memorial Stadium video board.

“Today, our hearts are heavy.” Coach Matt Rhule of the Cornhuskers wrote, “No words, just prayers for (Georgia athletics) and the families of Devin and Chandler.”

A few hours after the collision, Georgia coach Kirby Smart shared photos of both casualties on Twitter.

Regarding Willock, he wrote, “Miss you already.” “Devin, I’m thinking of you tonight.”

Regarding LeCroy, Smart remarked, “Gone too soon.” Chandler, your generosity will always be in my memory.
