Atlético-MG Nears Agreement with Júnior Santos from Botafogo

 

Júnior , who scored one of the goals in the 2024 Libertadores title match, is set to depart Botafogo as Atlético-MG has accepted a proposal for the talented forward.

Only a few bureaucratic details remain before the contract is signed, as reported by journalist Jorge Nicola.

 

Since joining the Rio de Janeiro club in 2023, Santos has experienced significant success, finishing as the top scorer in the last edition of the Libertadores with 10 goals, the most a player has achieved for Botafogo in the tournament’s history.

His decisive goal in the final was scored against Atlético-MG, who have now viewed him as a valuable acquisition.

 

During his tenure at Botafogo, Santos found the back of the net 28 times and provided nine assists in 115 appearances.

His career also includes stints at Fortaleza, Ponte Preta, Ituano, and nearly three seasons in Japan’s professional leagues.

With Santos on board, Atlético-MG will have added their fourth reinforcement of the transfer window. Prior to Santos, the club secured left-back Natal from and midfielders Gabriel Menino and Patrick from Palmeiras.

 

  • In the transfer market, Atlético has shifted its focus away from pursuing Santos’ teammate Soteldo and Artur from Zenit. However, they are reportedly close to finalizing a deal with Cuello from Athletico-PR.
