The Australian Football League (AFL) community has recently mourned the loss of several notable figures:

 

Cam McCarthy: The former Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney forward was found deceased at his Perth residence on May 9, 2024, at the age of 29. Western Australia Police stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious.

 

Sal Rees: A trailblazer in women’s football, Rees passed away suddenly at 58 due to a brain aneurysm. She was the first woman to play 200 games in the VFLW and was instrumental in advancing women’s participation in the sport.

 

Michael Turner: The Geelong great, who played 245 games for the Cats between 1974 and 1988, died at Lorne Community Hospital just weeks after turning 70.

 

John Schultz: Known as “Gentleman John,” the AFL legend and former Western Bulldogs player passed away at 85 after battling illness. Schultz was a Brownlow Medalist and a significant figure in the club’s history.

 

 

These individuals left indelible marks on the AFL and will be remembered for their contributions to

the sport.
