Explaining Francis Ngannou’s mistake against Anthony Joshua, a seasoned heavyweight
Francis Ngannou, in Dillian Whyte’s opinion, was “a bit complacent” when it came to Anthony Joshua.
Joshua defeated Ngannou last Saturday in the second round, and this victory was significantly more convincing than Tyson Fury’s victory against the former UFC heavyweight champion from the previous year.
In October 2023, Fury was defeated by the Cameroonian and emerged victorious only through a split decision, with many onlookers believing the outcome should have been different.
Speaking with Sky Sports, Whyte believes that his successful debut prevented him from implementing any important adjustments.
“Francis lacks the experience necessary to defeat the best players. Because he performed well against Fury but Fury didn’t take him seriously, he became a little complacent,” he remarked.
“He gave Fury some trouble because he thought he was going to outbox him, but that ultimately proved to be his downfall.
“I believe that fight gave him false confidence to the extent that he stayed in the pocket and didn’t try to shift his head, hold, or do anything else while he was getting hit hard by large punches.
“He fell and then got back up in the same spot. remained motionless, lowered himself, rose to his feet, and essentially waited for the third right hand.
“Well, I predicted AJ to win even though I knew it would happen.
“AJ is a puncher, and when you fight a right-handed puncher, you don’t just stand there in front of them with your hands essentially down and change your posture halfway through. He became a southpaw; why? That was nonsensical.
“AJ has so much power and experience, I just felt it would be too much. To be honest, I had assumed Francis would be a little bit better. However, although he practices boxing, his training isn’t recognized, so he hasn’t learned the fundamentals.
“Someone like AJ, an experienced gold medallist, all these world title fights, he covers the basics on a daily basis and that is where Francis came unstuck.”
