Purdue and Edey dominate the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament.
Minneapolis, Minnesota Fans will have one last opportunity to see one of the greatest players in conference history on Wednesday at the Target Center during the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Zach Edey, a center for Purdue University, will play his final games against conference opponents in the men’s tournament, much how the women’s tournament served as a farewell for Iowa’s Caitlin Clark.
Friday at noon, Edey will kick off as the top-seeded Boilermakers take on Minnesota or Michigan State. The actual competition gets underway on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Since Ralph Sampson of Virginia won the award three times between 1981 and 1983, Edey is in position to win it for the second time in a row.
Throughout his career, the 7-foot-4 Edey has been a constant presence, and in 2022–2023 he was able to increase his scoring totals. Edey is over two points better than his season-ago average (24.2 points, 11.7 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, and 2 assists per game).
Edey has a huge impact on a game. Because of his size, he is almost impossible to defend. Because of his defensive quickness, most of the lane becomes off-limits to other vehicles.
But Edey’s greatest contribution to Purdue’s program has been where it has remained during his career. Purdue has an overall record of 86-17 since 2022. The Boilermakers are the current Big Ten Tournament champions as well as the two-time regular season champions.
“Zach Edey’s growth, his general success, and the program’s success will be what define his legacy. Following Purdue’s 78-70 victory over Wisconsin, head coach Matt Painter remarked, “He’s the most successful class we’ve had.”
