In the Capitals’ victory over the Bruins, Ovechkin establishes an NHL record for empty-net goals.
On Saturday night, The Great Eight broke yet another NHL record. Alex Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky for the record number of empty net goals in NHL history with his 57th goal overall.
On Saturday, the Washington Capitals ended a six-game losing streak by shutting out the Boston Bruins with three goals.
Ovechkin sprinted past Boston’s skaters with 27 seconds remaining in the game to score an easy goal. It was his fourth straight game with a goal on Saturday. After 14 games, the 38-year-old has scored 15 points.
With 834 goals in his career, the left winger is currently 60 goals shy of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record.
Coach Spencer Carbery of the Capitals declared after the victory, “Our best complete game of the year, hands down.” “From beginning to end, we were proficient in every aspect that required attention.”
With 32 games left, Washington is outside the postseason picture with 53 overall points this season.
Considering how much we’ve been battling, Carbery added, “it’s something to build off of.”
The Capitals return to the District on Sunday to face the Vancouver Canucks, who hold the best record in the Western Conference.
