The collegiate basketball calendar taught us the following six things.
Though the 2022–23 college basketball season is just years old, significant events have already occurred. Things really heat up around Thanksgiving.
These are the first six things we have discovered.
These three players are perhaps the best in college basketball. Although that might sound exaggerated, it isn’t. Duke boasts three of the top five players in the nation, at the very least.
The supporting cast of Duke still raises some concerns. Barring Williamson, Reddish, and Barrett, the other Blue Devils scored a combined 21 points versus Army.
These queries might not even be relevant, though. Tre Jones will also be underappreciated, but up until now, he has done just what he needed to do to bring those players the ball and create open looks. It’s fun to be on this squad.
Preseason AP Poll rankings placed Kansas as the top team, largely due to the club’s coach and front court. With LaGerald Vick and K.J. Lawson as reliable wings, the Jayhawks boasted the best 4-5 combo in college basketball in Udoka Azubuike and Dedric Lawson.
While all of above is true, Kansas’ backcourt appears capable of becoming far better than anticipated. Given that the Jayhawks entered the season with a wealth of excellent choices, this isn’t all that remarkable. They were just unverified. Against Michigan State, however, Devon Dotson and Quentin Grimes looked the part.
Together, the rookie backcourt scored 37 points and drained nine 3-pointers. While the scoring total is excellent, the shooting percentages are really encouraging. Grimes and Dotson appear to be capable of driving, distributing, shooting, and scoring, so spacing shouldn’t be an issue. They really do complement one another wonderfully.
There may be growing pains for this pair. But Kansas has the infrastructure to make their lives simpler, and both are obviously gifted.
Villanova suffered severe losses, but they will still be fantastic.
Yes, it appears that Villanova will fare well. Although Michigan presents the Wildcats with their first real challenge on Wednesday, the first two games have shown us the classic Villanova.
