While the Seahawks have started the season undefeated, the offensive line has struggled and calls for the team to turn to its third round rookie are growing louder.

The Seattle Seahawks handily defeated the Miami Dolphins Sunday 24-3 at Lumen Field, but in the process suffered a pair of injuries on the defensive line that could prove costly in the coming weeks. Both Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy left the game and did not return, though the reality is the team did truly require the services of either to dominate the Dolphins.

However, regardless of the impact on the defensive line to the loss of the pair, the reality is that most of the discussion coming out of the game will focus on the struggles of the line on the other side of the ball. Specifically, there has been not shortage of calls for Seattle to explore all options in terms of replacing a pair of guards who have struggled at times so far this season.

With that said, so far exploring all options to address the issues on the interior of the offensive line does not appear to include looking to the rookie who is on the bench, as third round pick Christian Haynes did not play a single offensive snap in Week 3.

Head coach Mike Macdonald can say whatever he wants about a rotation between Haynes and Bradford at right guard, though at this point it is starting to appear the 15 snaps Haynes played in Week 2 were a courtesy. Similar to how Jake Bobo’s lone pair of targets this season came while playing in his hometown, Haynes only real playing time so far on the 2024 season came when the Hawks were a stone’s throw from where Haynes played his college football at UConn.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jarran Reed and Dre’Mont Jones stepped up in the absence of Williams and Murphy. Reed, in particular saw an increase in playing time, being on the field for more than 80% of the defensive snaps played. That represents a sharp jump from the 62% and 54% of snaps he played during the first two weeks of the season.

In addition to Reed, the injuries to the defensive line game Mike Morris an opportunity to play 14 defensive snaps. Certainly a modest number, but the second highest snap count of his career to date.

In addition, Morris continued to lead the Seahawks in special teams snaps with 21. Coming in right behind Morris were the special teams regulars of K’Von Wallace, Coby Bryant, Jake Bobo and Brady Russell, all with 20 special teams snaps, with Drake Thomas (19) and Dareke Young (18) not far behind.

And for those curious how much the top overall picks for the Seahawks in 2020 and 2021 saw the field for Miami Sunday, Jordyn Brooks played every defensive snap for the Dolphins, While Dee Eskridge was on the field for eight offensive and a pair of special teams snaps in the game.

And now it’s on to Week 4 and the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football.
