Tyron Smith’s best alternative in Big D could be former Jets first-round pick Mekhi Becton, according to Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder.
In a blog published on Sunday, April 7, Holder said, “The Cowboys were up against the cap to begin free agency, which is a big reason why long-time starting left tackle Tyron Smith didn’t return and inked a deal with the Jets, and why Jerry Jones has been quiet during free agency.”
Tyler Smith is now expected to go from left guard to left tackle, but acquiring Becton might allow the All-Pro to continue playing his best position. Smith has experience at right tackle, having started a few games there last season and going all the way back to his college days at Louisville, even if Dallas wants to leave him on the outside.
In the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Jets selected Becton with the eleventh overall pick. He was chosen as Gang Green’s first official selection under the Joe Douglas period.
Becton’s relationship with the Jets didn’t work out for a number of reasons. It was specifically Becton’s incapacity to remain on the football field that caused friction.
During his first four seasons in the NFL, he never finished a season at full health. His season ended early in two of the previous three years because of a season-ending injury.
Had the Becton selection been successful, the Jets wouldn’t have needed to venture into free agency to entice Smith to relocate to New York.
In the 2024 season, the green and white are now going all out. Smith is coping with his own injury concerns, just like Becton.
The good news is that Smith managed to play in 13 games and finished as a second-team All-Pro last season. Since the 2019 campaign, he has played in the fewest games overall.
Jets team writer Eric Allen was informed by head coach Robert Saleh that the Cowboys have been contacted about their successful 2023 plan involving Smith.
That is the goal we are pursuing. attempting to determine what’s best for him. We are obtaining data from Dallas. We will be thrilled with any solution we come up with. The man clearly wants to talk to and communicate with you all the time; he wants to train and be on the field. Saleh said, “It sounds like one of those folks who we’re going to have to keep safe from him.
