Things to watch out for in the Las Vegas Raiders’ free agency.
Henderson, Nevada Tom Telesco has only been general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders for more than six weeks.
He already has an objective in mind, though, because NFL free agency opens next week (legal tampering begins on Monday before players can be signed with the new league year beginning on Wednesday) and there are a number of Raiders expected to be available.
At last week’s combine, Telesco stated, “I do want to build a culture with the Raiders that we prefer to re-sign our own.”
Although it’s a noble endeavor, there is risk involved.
Sixteen unrestricted free agents will be available to the Raiders, and Telesco stated he did not plan to use the franchise tag.
As the Raiders embark on a new direction under coach Antonio Pierce, who was hired as the full-time coach in January after going 5-4 as an interim coach this past season, Telesco and the team have a lot of decisions to make regarding their “own” free agents, with nearly $43.3 million in salary cap space, according to ESPN’s Roster Management System.
