Coach Walters expressed pride in Mam’s reaction to Leniu’s racial epithet.
After Sydney Roosters prop Spencer Leniu allegedly made a racist insult, Brisbane coach Kevin Walters expressed his delight in Ezra Mam and the team’s response.
Tuesday marked the Broncos’ return to Brisbane following their 20-10 setback in the first round in Las Vegas.
In response to allegations that Leniu had dubbed Brisbane’s No. 6 Mam a “monkey,” the NRL charged him with contrary conduct on Monday and forwarded him directly to the courts.
When referee Adam Gee brought the Roosters recruit on the field for a report, he refuted the accusation and was heard to ask, “Why would I say that?”
Referee Gee was informed by Mam that “he called me a monkey,” and a Broncos player was audibly corroborated.
Players spoke to each other as they passed each other at the Hilton at Resorts World following the match.
There was no risk of a physical confrontation, according to witnesses who spoke with AAP. Club employees escorted Leniu down the hallway while they conversed. The teams were in the hotel on the same floor.
Walters commended proud Torres Strait Islander Mam for advocating for herself and said the players had offered her a lot of support.
Walters remarked, “That’s just part of being a Bronco.”
“Whenever a peer or friend experiences pressure or an incidence that is simply intolerable, all clubs stand by them. At the Broncos, we are a close-knit community that helps one another out in every manner.
Racial epithets are no longer accepted in society or in daily life. The community is a part of rugby league. As an Indigenous player, Ezra has every right to be outraged and defend himself.
“The NRL is currently handling it, and our player Ezra is handling it internally. We are evading him. He is fine, but the night after the game was difficult for him. There is a lot of assistance available.
