Steve Clifford on the Hornets’ Issues: “We Have Too Little Talent”
Halfway through the season, Steve Clifford, the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, wasn’t sugarcoating the reason behind his team’s troubles.
He claimed that the Hornets had minimal margin for mistake in both practice and competition due to their lack of talent.
“You have to tell the truth to an NBA player if you want him to listen to you,” Clifford said to the media. They understand that there isn’t much space for error, I tell them. I give them the information as well. Their labor, their effort, or how much they want to win are not our worries. We’re not as talented as we could be.”
The Hornets sit in 13th place in the Eastern Conference at 10-36. Since the turn of the new year, they have won just three games and are on a five-game losing streak.
Charlotte’s problems might have an answer in a possible deal. Kyle Lowry and a first-round selection were sent by the Hornets to the Miami Heat in exchange for guard Terry Rozier. However, Lowry has not yet worn a Hornets uniform, and it appears that he may be headed for another trade.
Although it doesn’t seem probable that Charlotte will end its seven-year playoff drought this year, the Hornets could acquire some key draft picks to help them continue their long-term planning if they can work out some trades before the trade deadline.
Clifford will be counting on his players to persevere in the interim, despite their seeming lack of quality.
