Mike McCarthy will continue to lead the Dallas Cowboys.
FRISCO, Texas — Mike McCarthy will be back for a fifth season as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Owner and general manager Jerry Jones met with McCarthy on Wednesday, after the coach had finished exit interviews with the players.
In an official team statement, Jones stated, “I think this club is very close and capable of accomplishing our ultimate goals and the best move forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach.” “Maintaining the team’s success under Mike’s guidance as our head coach has many advantages.”
Jones was “floored” by the Cowboys’ wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium. When asked about McCarthy’s future after the Washington Commanders regular-season finale, Jones responded, “We’ll see how each game goes,” while also praising the coach.
This this gave rise to rumors that Jones may take McCarthy’s position.
“Our loss on Sunday is shared by everyone here, not just Coach McCarthy,” Jones said in Wednesday’s statement. “Our players. Our coaches. Our front office. Myself. There is accountability for our results. I am accountable for our results. The lens we use to view and evaluate Coach McCarthy is holistic. While we’re all disappointed with the result on Sunday and with our playoff record, I am 100 percent supportive of him as our head coach and ability to reach our goals.”
McCarthy finished the regular season with a 42-25 record and two NFC East championships in 2021 and 2023. The Cowboys made history by being the first team in the Super Bowl era to win 12 games in three consecutive seasons without making it to the conference finals at the very least.
