Russell Wilson and other players not on the roster cost the Broncos $67 million in salary cap charges.
Due to the fact that they will be paying several players to suit up for their rivals, the Denver Broncos have not been particularly active in free agency thus far this offseason.
ESPN’s Jeff Legwold said that the Broncos are paying players on other teams a substantial sum of money following the release of safety Justin Simmons and quarterback Russell Wilson, as well as the transfer of receiver Jerry Jeudy.
“The Broncos have salary cap liabilities for players that are no longer on their roster totaling just over $67 million, with $53 million of that coming from Wilson’s departure this year,” Legwold said.
Denver retained a handful of its own free agents and added safety Brandon Jones (three years, $20 million) and defensive end Malcolm Roach (two years, $7 million) from the open market. The team’s approach so far is a stark contrast to last offseason when it handed out three of the 11 biggest free-agent contracts to non-quarterbacks.
