Bill Self added in Darrion Williams’ flawless play and TTU’s crushing of Kansas.
LUBBOCK, Texas: Texas Tech’s Darrion Williams had a flawless game, and the Red Raiders never trailed in a decisive 79-50 victory over sixth-ranked Kansas, which resulted in Bill Self’s first-ever ejection from the Jayhawks in his 21 seasons as head coach.
With the exception of Kentucky in 1950, Kansas’s 29-point loss on Monday was the most it has ever suffered against an unranked opponent in the history of the AP poll (since 1948–49).
This season, an AP top-10 team fell on the road to an unranked opponent for the thirty-third time; this is already a record during the first two weeks of February for an AP poll team in the history of the poll.
Williams, a sophomore transfer from Nevada, made 12-of-12 shots for a career-high 30 points, including four three-pointers. In addition, he grabbed 11 rebounds and made both of his free throws.
Red Raiders coach Grant McCasland remarked, “Give him credit because [of] his work habits and his belief in this club. I do believe the game rewards those people that play it to win.” “What a fantastic combo he had tonight—scoring, setting up plays, grabbing rebounds, and winning overall.”
In the history of the AP poll, Williams’ 12 field goals without a miss were the most against a ranked opponent. In addition, he was the only player against a ranked opponent in the previous 25 seasons to have 30 points, 10 rebounds, and a perfect shooting percentage.
Williams gave the Red Raiders (18-6, 7-4 Big 12) their first basket of the game, a three-pointer. During the first 13 minutes, they made 8 of 12 long range shots, jumping ahead 27–14.
With guard Dajuan Harris Jr. not playing at full strength after rolling his left ankle late in a 64-61 home victory over 12th-ranked Baylor two days earlier, Kansas (19-6, 7-5) had a tough evening. This was the team’s second game in a row without Big 12 leading scorer Kevin McCullar Jr.
“Right now, we’re exhausted and bruised,” Self remarked.
A quick two technical fouls after an offensive foul call on Hunter Dickinson under the basket led to Self’s ejection with 5:49 remaining, but the coach didn’t seem to be that bothered by it.
