In their 4-2 La Liga victory over Osasuna, Real Madrid has lodged a complaint with the Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] referring to the referee as “negligent” for neglecting to include racist chants directed towards Vinícius Júnior in his match report.
Dani Carvajal, a teammate from Real Madrid, gestured to referee Juan Martinez Munuera as television cameras captured some of the crowd singing “Vinícius, die” during Saturday’s encounter at El Sadar.
Vinícius scored two goals during the game, turning to face the crowd and pointing to his ear to celebrate his second goal in the 64th minute.
In his official match report, Martinez Munuera made no mention of any disrespectful shouting.
In response to the grave insults directed once more towards our player Vinícius Júnior—this time during our team’s most recent La Liga match at El Sadar—Real Madrid C.F. released the following statement.
Because of the careless writing in the referee’s report, our club has lodged a complaint against match referee Juan Martinez Munuera with the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee. Despite being alerted repeatedly by our players that the obscenities and degrading chants were being directed towards our player Vinícius Júnior, the referee consciously chose not to comment on them.
Real Madrid has also reported the insults and degrading chants to the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance in Sports, along with a complaint to the [RFEF], in order to hold the individuals who spoke them accountable.
“In view of the regrettable events that took place in El Sadar, Real Madrid has broadened the complaint it filed last Friday, March 15, to the State Attorney General’s Office regarding crimes of hate and discrimination, regarding the racist and hateful remarks made to our player Vinícius Júnior near the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic and the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. The complaint also requests the identification of those who committed these acts.
“The brutality against our player Vinícius Júnior must end once and for all. Real Madrid condemns these violent acts of racism, prejudice, and hatred once more.”
at a statement released on Tuesday, Osasuna categorically denied that there had been any racist shouting at their stadium. They also rejected the taunts that were directed against a minority group during Saturday’s game, stating that they “in no way contained racist references.”
Prior to Barcelona’s Champions League round-of-16 match against Napoli at Montjuic last week, fans were heard chanting “Vinícius, die.” Similarly, before Atletico Madrid’s match against Inter Milan, a group of people was heard yelling “Vinícius, chimpanzee.”
Opposition fans have been known to harass Vinícius with racist taunts on several occasions. One such incident occurred at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium in May of last year, which prompted an investigation into three individuals for allegedly making racial insults towards the player.
