Tim Pernetti, the athletic director at Rutgers, initially saw the video showing Mike Rice, the head basketball coach, beating his players during practices on November 26. In his resignation letter on Friday, Pernetti stated that his initial thought was to terminate Rice right away.
But that’s not what he did. Rather, Pernetti obtained second opinions and, per the advice of Rutgers attorneys, he hired an outside investigator to prepare a report. At first, Pernetti conferred with the president of Rutgers, Robert L. Barchi; the temporary general counsel, John B. Wolf; and a few personnel in human resources. They made the decision to engage attorney John P. Lacey of northern New Jersey to look into Mike Rice on their own.
