Latest News: We anticipate great things from Overshown

At this weekend’s NFL Owners Meetings in Orlando, owner/general manager Jerry Jones, ever the optimist, expressed his confidence that the Cowboys have already made progress at linebacker. In addition to bringing back a third-round pick who was out of action for the all of the previous season, they signed Eric Kendricks, a nine-year veteran who is well-versed in Mike Zimmer’s system.

Regarding strengthening the run defense, Jones stated that he anticipates DeMarvion Overshown to have a significant impact. The preseason injury that sidelined the 2023 third-round selection for the entire 2018 season was a ruptured ACL. Jones is depending on the combination of Overshown and Kendricks to support a run defense that has finished 16th and 17th the past two seasons.

“Now, are you able to halt the run more skillfully than you did in the last few years?” Regarding those two additions, Jones said. “Those types of things are what matter.”

The ultimate goal was to convert Tyler Smith, who the Cowboys selected in the first round of the 2022 draft, to left tackle after Tyron Smith’s playing career came to an end. Although that has finally occurred—Tyler Smith signed a free agent contract with the Jets last week—it is still unclear where Tyler Smith will play in 2024.

Both Stephen Jones and Mike McCarthy made suggestions over the offseason that Tyler Smith would stay at guard for the time being, prior to free agency. However, Jerry Jones instructed reporters to “keep the thought there” that Smith might switch to left tackle during Sunday’s NFL Owner’s Meetings in Orlando.

Answering a question from the media, Jones remarked, “I’d say that’s a good, viable thing.” “He’s definitely got the potential to be a terrific left tackle, I would say.”

When Tyron went down, Tyler Smith spent the most of his rookie season at left tackle. He remained there until Tyron returned in December, when he switched to playing right tackle. Then, after suffering several injuries that kept him out of action for three games, Tyler Smith moved to left guard and didn’t venture out to tackle once in the previous season.

Throughout his career, he has started every 31 games, 16 at left tackle and 15 at left guard.
