EXCLUSIVE: Something has got a change…! A way-too-ea…

Examine the 2024 Super Bowl prospects of the NFC teams.

With the draft in Detroit on April 25 and free agency starting on March 13, teams will have a lot of roster alterations to do before the 2024 season kicks up in September. Despite this, Yardbarker NFL writers continue to assess each of the 16 NFC clubs’ chances of winning the Super Bowl. In parenthesis are the regular-season records for 2023.

Dallas Cowboys (12-5) of the NFC East | SB potential: Now or never… again | The Cowboys still boast one of the best rosters in the NFL despite their recent postseason failure. A few adjustments to Dallas’ fifth-ranked offense and defense should keep the team in the running for the Super Bowl while the rest of the division rebuilds or retools.

NEW YORK GIANTS (6–11) | SB prospects: Forget it The Giants will never be close to winning a Super Bowl unless New York escapes the burden of quarterback Daniel Jones’ massive deal. With their frequently injured quarterback slated to earn $47 million next season, New York may find it difficult to turn around its 31st-ranked passing attack and find a worthy defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale replacement.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (11-6): Let’s hope for the SB! Another year means a fresh group of coordinators. After the Eagles’ 1-5 regular-season record and their lackluster playoff performance, head coach Nick Sirianni seemed to have run out of ideas. This was evident in his most recent news conference.

WASHINGTON COMMANDERS (4–13) | SB potential: More likely to be bipartisan legislation A new quarterback, either Drake Maye of North Carolina or Caleb Williams of USC, will be helpful, but he or she can only do so much for a club that allowed the most yards (30.5) and points per game (6,612) to opponents in 2023. Though a trip to the Super Bowl should be considered a long-term ambition, better days are ahead. — Bruce Ewing.

Arizona Cardinals (4–13) in the NFC West | SB potential: Much work still | Whether it’s a long-term quarterback or a playmaker like wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., the Cardinals will have a chance to choose a franchise player with the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, it alone won’t be sufficient to quickly improve a club that ranked 31st in points against per game (26.8) and 24th in points per game (19.4).

LOS ANGELES RAMS (10-7) | SB possibility: Could Stafford score one more run? Thanks in large part to quarterback Matthew Stafford’s healthy status and an impressive second-half performance in which he threw for eighteen touchdowns, the Rams recovered from a five-win season to make it back to the postseason in 2023.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (12-5): Still a Super Bowl favorite with SB potential For the past five years, the 49ers have made it to the Super Bowl twice and have been a virtual lock to win the NFC Championship Game. The 49ers will still have one of the strongest rosters in sports from top to bottom and a Super Bowl-or-bust expectation, regardless of the outcome of quarterback Brock Purdy’s play or the cast of supporting players surrounding him.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (9–8) | SB prospects: Inferior performance The head coach of the Seahawks is still up in the air, but without a major personnel overhaul, another eight- or nine-win campaign appears to be the norm. In terms of points allowed (23.5), the defense has placed 25th in each of the past two seasons, and while Geno Smith has had a nice resurgence in his career, he is not a Super Bowl quarterback. — Adam Gretz.

NFC North Chicago Bears (7–10) | Very unlikely to make the SB The Bears, with their 20th-ranked defense and 18th-ranked offense in the NFL, still have a ways to go before they can be considered a contender. They also need to address the quarterback position. (Will they select a different quarterback with the first overall pick in the draft, or will Justin Fields return?) Furthermore, the franchise might have fallen further behind the eight ball after opting to stick with head coach Matt Eberflus rather than seek a new direction (Jim Harbaugh?).

DETROIT LIONS (12–5) | SB potential: Reasonable The Lions aren’t probably the most well-liked, unbeatable Super Bowl lock, but with their performance this season and a trip to the NFC Championship Game, they’ve kind of arrived. They won’t be the front-runners, but they will surely be discussed because of their strong base on both ends of the ball and their distinctive head coach in Dan Campbell.

Packers of Green Bay (9–8) | SB potential: improbable They’re at an in-between stage, much like the Packers and their oldest opponent, the Bears, but they seem to have an advantage because quarterback Jordan Love has already established himself as the team’s face. But Love by herself probably won’t be sufficient to return the Lombardi Trophy home.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS | SB (7–10)Potential: Let’s speak after adding a quarterback. With an improving defense and a new outlook on offense, the Falcons should make for an exciting team the following season. Because Desmond Ridder is not the solution, Atlanta’s prospects of hosting a lavish celebration on Bourbon Street in February 2025—Super Bowl LIX will take place in New Orleans—depend on its ability to acquire a solid quarterback.
