In a stunning prediction, the Washington Commanders choose the quarterback of the future in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Washington Commanders’ inaugural season under Josh Harris’ ownership wasn’t very memorable. The problem is, if the team chooses to start quarterback Drake Maye in the upcoming draft, they have an opportunity to make things right.
The departure of defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer early in the season left the Commanders in a mess the year before. As a result, Washington struggled throughout the course of the months, particularly following a devastating eight-game losing streak.
At the beginning of 2024, Harris fired head coach Ron Rivera due to the team’s dismal record. With a 4-13 record, the Commanders finished the season at the bottom of the NFC East. The team’s inability to make the playoffs caused them to currently own the longest current streak in the NFL without a postseason victory.
The Commanders are now in a favorable position throughout the offseason because of all of these considerations. Washington has an opportunity to significantly bolster its squad for the upcoming season by using the greatest cap space in the league in conjunction with a high draft pick.
Not only do they have the largest cap space in the NFL for the upcoming season, but they also own the second overall pick in the 2024 Draft. In his piece for ESPN, Seth Walder outlines the benefits of having Drake Maye as the team’s quarterback:
“In a quarterback-heavy draft, the Commanders dropped their last eight games to secure the No. 2 pick, freeing them from the burden of deciding whether to give Sam Howell another chance. They can now retain Howell as a reliable backup and acquire a top quarterback prospect—possibly UNC’s Maye—without having to trade up. The value of Washington is increasing, according to Walder.
In Washington, Maye’s skills will undoubtedly be put to good use if the front office chooses him. Either way, having the second overall pick and a large cap space will undoubtedly aid in the Commanders’ improvement.
