A Grip on Sports: The local college basketball season is barely hanging on following Friday losses in two different corners of the nation.
A GRIP ON SPORTS: I was genuinely shocked to see the sun this morning. Clouds and heavy rain were expected. Perhaps even an earthquake. After all, the college basketball season is barely surviving in these parts following the massacres that occurred both nearby and far away on Friday night.
• We would like to inform you that we will not be here tomorrow before we become overly involved this morning. Unless Washington State announces their basketball coach selection today. or something that would shake the planet. However, given Friday’s announcement that Jim Shaw will not be the next Cougar head coach, we do not anticipate anything of the such. Despite Kyle Smith’s desire that WSU carry on his “legacy,” which he expressed from 904 miles away.
Which raises an issue that this morning we are unable to address. Is there a legacy for Smith? We might talk more about that conversation in the bar later.
Let’s go back to Friday. The Detroit bulldozing. Portland’s swift departure. the Gonzaga Bulldogs’ basketball season comes to a conclusion in 2023–24 after 59 wins overall.
And, lest we forget, the culmination of more outstanding collegiate careers in this region on a single day since the Rose Bowl in 1998.
The legacy of Anton Watson. (That’s right, a local who attended Spokane for high school and college and frequented Papa Murphy’s more than the Sigma
Kayleigh and Kaylynne Truong, twins. Eliza Hollingsworth, who left Friday’s Texas loss late due to an ankle issue, appears to be okay. Maxwell Bryanna. Burton, Destiny.
We’re not sure whether we’ll ever see a crew like that use up all of their eligibility in one day. Not with the way collegiate sports are evolving. or how unpredictable the NCAA Tournament scheduling are. or our more mature years.
However, it was on Friday.
