Historic Bidwell Mansion in Chico Destroyed by Arson: Can It Be Saved?
Chico, California — A devastating fire has consumed the historic Bidwell Mansion, a cherished icon of Chico’s heritage and California history. The mansion, built in 1868 by John Bidwell, founder of Chico, was undergoing a $2.3 million renovation and was set to reopen in March 2025. Despite the swift response of fire crews, the structure was engulfed by flames, and parts collapsed shortly after their arrival.
Arson Confirmed as Cause
Investigators have confirmed that the fire was deliberately set. Kevin Alexander Carlson, a 30-year-old Chico resident, was arrested on January 2, 2025, and charged with felony arson of a structure using an accelerant. He was sentenced to 11 years in state prison and ordered to pay over $37 million in restitution to California State Parks.
Community Response and Recovery Efforts
In response to the tragedy, the North Valley Community Foundation launched the “Rebuild Bidwell Mansion Fund,” seeded with a $50,000 donation from California State University, Chico, and Tri Counties Bank. The fund aims to support the restoration of the mansion and preserve Chico’s history.
Park officials have stated that the recovery will take years, with the first phase including cleanup, damage assessments, building stabilization, and artifact recovery. Structural engineers will determine whether the building can be restored or if reconstruction is necessary.
A Symbol of Resilience
The destruction of Bidwell Mansion has left a profound impact on the community. Assemblyman James Gallagher expressed his condolences, stating, “My heart goes out to everyone who holds this place dear, and I know our community will come together in this difficult time to support one another.”
While the path to restoration is uncertain and will be challenging, the collective efforts of the community and state agencies offer hope that this historic landmark can be rebuilt and preserved for future generations.
