Her list of accolades is legit neverending.
Caitlin Clark has gotten plenty of attention for helping her team clinch some major wins during her college basketball career. The accolades she’s wracked up are truly endless, from Big Ten Player of the Year to All-American honors. But this past weekend, the University of Iowa guard was injured after she was knocked over by an Ohio State fan after Iowa lost to Ohio State on Sunday.
A clear reminder of the risks athletes face when crowds get out of control was provided by the image of one of the most well-known athletes in the country being knocked to the ground after a fan who was gazing at her phone clashed with her while storming the court.
The accident happened on Sunday as Iowa standout Caitlin Clark was walking with teammates towards the locker room after a 100-92 defeat to then-No. 18 Ohio State in Columbus. Clark was shocked but not hurt.
It was the second time in less than two weeks that Big Ten game attendees had stormed the court. The Nebraska men upset then-top-ranked Purdue on January 9 in Lincoln. The after-game management staff needs to be more equipped, according to Boilermakers coach Matt Painter, to safeguard athletes entangled in the chaos.
Of the six major basketball conferences, four fine host schools for a first offense of failure to keep fans off the court. The ACC does not levy fines and the Big Ten waits until a third offense.
