Rutgers star Jeremiah Williams receives Big Ten honor after scorching start with Scarlet Knights.

The catalyst of Rutgers basketball’s late-season turnaround is receiving recognition for his contributions.

After leading the Scarlet Knights to wins over Maryland and then-No. 11 Wisconsin last week, guard Jeremiah Williams has been named the Big Ten’s Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

The Iowa State transfer contributed a combined 32 points on 11-of-24 shooting (9-of-21 on twos, 2-of-3 on threes, 8-of-8 on free throws), 10 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and four turnovers in 47 minutes across the two victories.

Against the Terrapins, Williams hit a game-sealing layup in the final minute after dealing with significant foul trouble for most of the afternoon. Against the Badgers, he scored a game-high 18 points while dishing a game-high seven assists, five of which going to senior center Cliff Omoruyi.
The Scarlet Knights are 3-0 since Williams became eligible to play, resurrecting a season spiraling toward the bottom of the Big Ten. He missed the first 20 games of the year from a combination of the NCAA’s two-time transfer rule and for violating the governing body’s gambling policy.

Williams made his debut in a road win over Michigan on Feb. 3, two days after he sued the NCAA in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey. He was subsequently granted a temporary restraining order that nullified the remainder of the 15-game suspension handed to him by the governing body.

The award marks the fourth consecutive season that a Rutgers player has received Big Ten player of the week honors, with Williams becoming the third Scarlet Knight to earn the award and just the second to win it individually.
