As per Tobin Klinger, a spokesman for the University of Oregon, the school’s protocol is to keep coaches in the dark about allegations of sexual assault against student-athletes in order to avoid ruining investigations.

However, it is clear from Altman’s cell phone records—obtained under the Freedom of Information Act—that the coach was involved in Bigby-Williams’s case from the start.

Within the first 48 hours following the announcement of the police investigation into Bigby-Williams, Altman spoke with Lisa Peterson, the school’s assistant Title IX coordinator, five times, and with Shawn Neary, Bigby-Williams’s former Gillette College coach, four times. Peterson and Neary were directly aware of the criminal investigation into Bigby-Williams, but UO neglected to reveal this information to SI as well as to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, who asked for additional details regarding UO’s handling of the case in reaction to SI’s article.
