Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, has never faced a better defensive player than a former colleague.
When Chris Simms of NBC Sports asked Aaron Rodgers to identify the finest defensive player he had ever faced, he answered without hesitation.
“Charles Woodson is it,” Rodgers affirmed. “I had to practise against him for years.” Nobody was more talented, had better ball skills, could cover better, had better intuition, or understood the subtleties of the position better than him. He is the finest. By far.
From 2006 until 2012, Rodgers and Woodson were teammates. During his time with the Packers, Woodson was selected to two All-Pro teams and attended four Pro Bowls. Woodson played three more seasons with the Raiders after leaving Green Bay, and he retired after the 2015 campaign.
In2021, he’ll probably be elected to the Hall of Fame on the first vote.
In particular, Rodgers brought out Woodson’s dominant play in 2009, when he recorded a league-high nine interceptions, was named to the first team of the All-Pro team, and took home the NFL Defensive Player of the Year title.
“Charles dominated in a manner that I have never witnessed before. One of the best seasons I’ve ever seen was the 2009 one, Rodgers remarked. “I’ve never seen a player influence the game that way until what he did on defence.”
Oh no. Woodson may face competition shortly.
Rodgers concluded, “Aaron Donald.”
Last season, Rodgers and the Packers had a close-up look at Donald. During the Rams’ victory in Los Angeles, the two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year recorded two sacks, four quarterback hits, and two tackles for losses.
“Your entire strategy is stopping him, literally. 99: Where is it now? He’s so dominating that we have to slow him down, Rodgers remarked.
