Latest: Another Mega Star Commits To San Francisco 49ers…

Leonard Floyd is the 49ers’ first major addition of this week’s free agency class, joining the defensive front.

SANTA CLARA: Leonard Floyd, a defensive end who won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams two years ago, is joining the 49ers in their quest for their first Lombardi Trophy in thirty years.

Additionally, the 49ers see Yetur Gross-Matos, a pass rusher, as a means of reinvigorating a defensive front that they believe is essential to their success.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Floyd, 31, and Gross-Matos, 26, reached an agreement to sign two-year contracts worth $20 million and $18 million, respectively, on Monday when the NFL opened the free agency negotiation window.

For a 49ers team desperate to win a title and accomplish it with a strong front, adding defensive ends was a top goal. On the opposite side, 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa will lead that group, while 2023 valued free agent Javon Hargrave will anchor an interior that is likely to lose Arik Armstead.

Even with Armstead’s anticipated exit after nine seasons, that team’s depth could be further reduced through free agency. Javon Kinlaw, the 49ers’ top choice in 2020, and the New York Jets, whose head coach Robert Saleh served as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator during Kinlaw’s rookie season, reached an agreement on a one-year contract Monday night.

Along with defensive tackles Kevin Givens and Sebastian Joseph-Day, and defensive ends Clelin Ferrell, Chase Young, and Randy Gregory, were also available for re-signing on Monday.

It has been a month since the 49ers’ defense caved in overtime to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. And it’s been an annual ritual for the 49ers to seek a complement to Nick Bosa on the other side of the defensive front. This past October, the 49ers traded for Gregory and then Young, but neither produced at a high clip.

Floyd, 31, has a $12 million contract this season, with a possible $24 million cap. This kind of financial commitment would seem to limit the 49ers’ capacity to execute another big-ticket trade, like acquiring Joey Bosa, the older brother of the player, from the Los Angeles Chargers for a projected $15 million this season. The Panthers’ trade of Brian Burns to the New York Giants, who gave him a five-year, $150 million extension, was the greatest blockbuster of the day.
