It may be the end of Jared Goff’s season. Might he be done with the Lions too?

Review of the Lions for 2023: Jared Goff Leads Historic Season.

It was widely believed that quarterback Jared Goff, who the Detroit Lions acquired in a trade involving Matthew Stafford, would serve as a bridge quarterback as the team rebuilt.

That has turned out not to be the case after three years. In addition to winning two playoff games, including one against Stafford and the team he used to play for, Goff guided the Lions to their first-ever NFC North championship.

Now, the veteran passer has cemented himself as the team’s quarterback of the future, and will likely sign an extension this offseason. However, the extension, as well as the lack of an experienced backup on roster, create intrigue at the position heading into 2024.

Here’s a look at where the Lions stand at the quarterback position heading into the offseason.

Reason for hope

Goff’s partnership with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has been fruitful over the last two seasons. The offense has performed at an elite level, one that can be sustained with Johnson electing to come back for another year at the helm.

Since the Lions started 1-6 in 2022, Goff has gone 20-7 over his last 27 starts. He has played at a high level, and has showcased the leadership qualities necessary to drive a team to wins in big games.

Most recently, he played turnover-free during the Lions’ run to the NFC Championship Game. His level-headed mentality has been perfect during the team’s rise to becoming one of the NFL’s best teams.
