Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants are once more attempting to work out a deal, but if he demands more than $10 million annually, it might be the deciding factor.
Saquon Barkley is a running back for the New York Giants, but whether he returns depends on their salary cap.
Barkley wants a reasonable arrangement that makes sense for him. Although he hasn’t stated out loud what he believes to be fair, it wouldn’t be shocking if he wanted to rank in the top five paid for his role. Barkley would need to sign a contract that pays at least $10 million a season in order for that to occur.
But it’s allegedly not something the Giants are willing to pay that much for a running back. According to ESPN, the Giants are prepared to move on if they are unable to acquire Barkley at their asking price.
The Giants made Barkley offers last year that exceeded $10 million per year. But the guaranteed money proved to be a sticking point, and Barkley ultimately agreed to a modified franchise tag that included unrealized incentives worth around $1 million linked to the postseason.
There should be no shortage of experienced backs for the Giants to select from, including Zack Moss, Antonio Gibson, Devin Singletary, and Alexander Mattison, should Barkley and the team fail to reach an agreement on a new contract. They could use the draft to expand the group as well.
On Monday, the pre-free agency negotiation window will begin. On March 13, free agency officially starts.
