Bill O’Brien leaves Ohio State for Boston College, and Ohio State appoints UCLA coach Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator.
The UCLA head coach Chip Kelly was named the new offensive coordinator by Ohio State football on Friday night, the Buckeyes said. This news confirmed a previous story by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. OSU previously signed Bill O’Brien as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on January 19. Kelly has taken over for O’Brien. After barely three weeks in Columbus, O’Brien departed on Friday to take a head coaching position at Boston College.
During a Friday squad meeting, Kelly told UCLA that he is no longer the head coach of the Bruins, according to Bruin Report Online. Since Kelly was the offensive coordinator for eight seasons at New Hampshire, where Day played quarterback in the early 2000s, Kelly and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day have a tight relationship. Day achieved career highs in touchdowns and completion % while playing for the Wildcats. In 2002, Day left to take a position as tight ends coach at New Hampshire, where Kelly was still serving as offensive coordinator.
After Kelly’s Tuesday interview for the open offensive coordinator post with the Seattle Seahawks, the future of the Kelly era at UCLA remained uncertain. Kelly’s situation was precarious towards the end of the previous season, since there were rumors that he was facing termination. After the Bruins defeated USC in the rivalry game, the UCLA administration openly stated that the stories were untimely and that, at the time, it appeared like his position was secure.
Kelly’s career in Los Angeles appeared to be waning as seen by his repeated links to NFL openings this cycle. In six seasons with the Bruins, he was 35-34.
Kelly allegedly went through two interviews earlier in the summer for the available offensive coordinator position with the Las Vegas Raiders. Before the Washington Commanders hired USC offensive analyst Kliff Kingsbury, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN connected Kelly to the offensive coordinator post in addition to the Raiders.
Kelly got his first power conference coaching position as the offensive coordinator at Oregon in 2007. He became the head coach of the Ducks two years later before leading Oregon to the BCS National Championship Game at the end of the 2010 season. During his time in Eugene, the Ducks were known for their high-octane offense, which emphasized speed and athleticism.
Kelly made the jump to the NFL in 2013 when he became the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, leading the franchise to an NFC East Division title in his first year. He was fired after three seasons with a 26-21 record and later hired by the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. Kelly was fired at the end of the season after posting a 2-14 record.
